This practice of meditation can be a solitary affair. At some point or other we start to question the validity of what we are doing. The devil on our shoulder, the doubting thomas, the inner critic, they can all come knocking, finding some traction and a sympathetic ear.
Isn’t there something better, more useful that you could be doing? Do you really have time for this? What’s the point? I know what would really make you happy, how ‘bout some…?
Try to honour these moments of uncertainty, acknowledge their presence, clear a space for them and just sit anyway. In the immortal words on Jon Kabat-Zinn, “JUST DO IT!” And if we fall prey in that moment, to other more enticing distractions, despair not! Simply notice what’s what and encourage yourself, quietly and gently, to sit a bit later.
Finding the right balance between intention and non-striving requires practice just like anything else. Taking refuge in the community of other people can be a tremendous help. Finding common purpose in meditation practice is a wonderful antidote for those nay saying voices.
